Sculptor: Armando Barbon
The Dedication of the Statue
June 19, 2009
UPDATE: December 2009 we still have $15,000 to raise. Please spread the word about the first life size Town Crier statue in the world as we approach the final goal on this great project.
In early July 2009 The Butchart Gardens made a $15,000 donation to the Tommy Mayne fund.
On Friday May 1, 2009 Tommy Mayne made a $5,000.00 donation to the fund and pledged that every dollar donated between May 1, 2009 and June 19,2009 will be matched by him to a total of $2,500.00
Our statue thermometer will be update for the upcoming breakfast on May 29, 2009 at the Gorge Vale Golf Club. Let's see if we can get this up to the half way mark of $25,000 by then. Go Team!!
The project: How do you combine all of the volunteers, committee work, junkets, etc of so many over the last 25 years? The common theme of all people with Victoria A.M. has been to welcome the world to Victoria.
The offer: Victoria A.M. Association was made an incredible offer for this statue. Local sculptor Armando Barbon offered to do a life size bronze statue for our 25th anniversary for the bronzing cost only. In early Oct of 2008 another of Armando’s sculpting was dedicated to the Pacific Sports Center. This statue is valued at $150,000. Not only did Armando offer to donate the labour of this project he also offered us time. He made the commitment that this tribute to Town Crier’s statue would be able to be dedicated on site on June 19, 2009 when, we officially celebrate our 25th anniversary. The completed statue will have a plaque on it which will have the names of Past and Present Town Criers along with space for the future. Victoria A.M. Association is privileged to have had an official Criers volunteer for us, (Bob Alexander.) Victoria A.M. has used the Town Crier for many years not only in the Meet and Greet but also in our Hatting Ceremonies. The next question was how we raise this large amount of money.
